Residents and visitors to Israel may notice something different about the movie posters for Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2: the lack of star actress Jennifer Lawrence. The Oscar winner has been scrubbed clean due to fears of vandalism and the general lack of acceptance of females on cinema posters.
In should be no surprise that the city of Bnei Brak, an Ultra Orthodox Judaism area located east of Tel Aviv, forbids females on posters, but it’s a little more surprising to outsiders that across Israel, women on media are generally frowned upon. Instead of Jennifer, viewers are treated with a raven.
According to an interview by Ynet with the film’s Israel publicity firm, even in more liberal areas of Israel, posters featuring women tend to be vandalized, adding an additional cost and headache to a marketing campaign.
